Sie haben sich seit Jahren nicht gesehen, doch in diesem Jahr taucht Chelsea Thayer (Jane Fonda) bei ihren Eltern im Sommerhaus am See auf. Sie will mit ihrem Verlobten für ein paar Wochen nach Europa und den Sohn ihres zukünftigen Mannes für die Zeit bei ihren Eltern Ethel (Katherine Hepburn) und Norman (Henry Fonda) lassen. When their daughter Chelsea arrives, the family is forced to renew the bonds of love and overcome the generational friction that has existed for years. Norman must find his way through his anger and fear of growing old, while Chelsea struggles to rebuild their relationship.
