Esther Blodgett ist ein einfaches Farmmädchen, dass von einer großen Schauspielkarriere in Hollywood träumt. Während sie auf einer Hollywoodparty kellnert, lernt sie den alkoholsüchtigen Filmstar Norman Maine kennen. Mit seiner Hilfe gelingt es ihr tatsächlich Rollenangebote in der Traumfabrik zu ergattern. Als sie Norman dann auch noch heiratet, scheint das Glück perfekt zu sein. Während Esthers Laufbahn einen kometenhaften Lauf, nimmt, will kein Studio mehr etwas von dem alternden, alkoholsüchtigen Norman wissen. Und tatsächlich legt man Esther bald nahe, sich von Norman zu trennen, da seine ständigen Abstürze ihrem Image schaden...
