Wissenschaftler und Militärs verfallen in hektische Betriebsamkeit, können aber nicht verhindern, daß das Monster im Norden der Insel an Land geht und sich an einem Atomkraftwerk mit Energie versorgt. Da entdeckt Professor Hayashida durch Zufall die Achillesferse des Ungeheuers: Godzilla läßt sich von denselben Magnetstrahlen leiten wie die Zugvögel. Als sich die Echse anschickt, Tokio in einen Trümmerhaufen zu verwandeln, senden die Forscher entsprechende Signale aus und locken Godzilla in einen tödlichen Vulkankrater.
1984 inszenierte Koji Hashimoto ("Operation Jupiter") dieses Remake des ersten "Godzilla" von 1954, wobei sich die Special Effects der Neuzeit in etwa angepaßt haben, auch wenn sie nach wie vor keinem Vergleich mit den Big-Budget-Produktionen aus den USA standhalten. Immerhin aber ist der Titelheld nun zu einigen knapp bemessenen mimischen Gesten fähig, ohne daß gleich der Reißverschluß platzt.

A reporter investigates the disappearance of a ship. He finds the ship and discovers that all the hands have been killed by a giant sea louse except for one. The lone survivor then tells the reporter that the ship was attacked by Godzilla (Gojira). Fearing a panic, the Japanese government then takes the survivor into custody to keep him from revealing that Godzilla has returned. However, a Soviet nuclear submarine is destroyed and the situation puts them and the United States on the brink of nuclear war, until the Japanese decide to come clean and admit that it was Godzilla. Soon the Japan and the rest of the world are on red alert as they wait for Godzilla to begin his rampage anew.
