Im Gefängnis schreibt der aus Puerto Rico stammende Miguel Piñero das Theaterstück "Short Eyes", das später auch verfilmt wird. Mit seinen bissigen Texten steigt Piñero als Autor und Spoken Word Performer zum Liebling der Kulturszene auf und lässt sich trotz lukrativer TV-Auftritte, etwa in der Kultserie "Miami Vice", nicht in seiner Konsequenz korrumpieren. Frauen wie Männer erliegen der erotischen Ausstrahlung des bisexuellen Künstlers, dessen exzessiver Drogen- und Alkoholkonsum ihn schließlich 1988 das Leben kostet. Benjamin Bratt, zuvor hauptsächlich als Ex-Lover von Julia Roberts in Erscheinung getreten, liefert als angry young man die schauspielerische Leistung seines Lebens ab.

"Piñero" tells the story of the explosive life of a Latino icon, the poet-playwright-actor Miguel Piñero, whose urban poetry is recognized as a pre-cursor to rap and hip-hop. After doing time in hard-core Sing-Sing for petty thefts and drug dealing, Piñero's prison experiences developed into the 1974 Tony-nominated play Short Eyes. The resulting notoriety and fame was too much for the Latino bad-boy genius who retreated to the darker corners of New York City.
