Bei einer Friedensmission ins pestgeplagte Kaledonien, dem heutigen Schottland, verschwinden vier Boten des römischen Reichs. Um sie wiederzufinden, entsendet Rom zehn seiner besten Soldaten in die unwirtliche Winterlandschaft nördlich des Hadrianswalls. Doch dort stehen die tapferen Krieger bald einem Gegner gegenüber, der weitaus gefährlicher ist als die Pest oder marodierende Söldner.
