Für die Produktion der Serie hat man sich an den 14 Büchern von Autor L. Frank Baum (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz und viele weitere) orientiert. In diesen werden die Versionen der Figuren und Handlungsorte aus Oz als tödliche Krieger und konkurrierende Königreiche präsentiert. Außerdem gibt es eine Interpretation des Zauberers von Oz, die es so noch nicht gegeben hat. So findet sich in „Emerald City“ die eigenwillige und 20 Jahre alte Protagonistin Dorothy Gale bald im Zentrum eines epischen und blutigen Kampfes um die Kontrolle von Oz wieder.
