Die Serie handelt von den vier Freunden Mac, Charlie, Sweet Dee und ihrem Bruder Dennis, die in Philadelphia ein meist schlecht besuchtes Irish Pub besitzen.
Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton und Charlie Day sind gleichzeitig Hauptarsteller, Produzenten und Autoren der Serie, was ihnen große Freiheiten und Improvisationsmöglichkeiten eröffnet. Die Dialoge wirken dadurch natürlich, besonders die kleinen Streitereien zwischen Bruder und Schwester sind witzig anzusehen. Auch wenn die Szenen nicht selten in lauten Wortgefechten enden, so geht einem das keineswegs so schnell auf die Nerven wie beispielsweise bei „Curb Your Enthusiasm“.
